What is a SIP and why use it?

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is a way of investing a fixed amount of money in a mutual fund every month. Instead of timing the market, you buy more units when prices are low and fewer when they are high — a concept called rupee-cost averaging. Over 10+ years this has historically delivered 12–14% CAGR in Indian equity funds.

How does the SIP calculator work?

Our calculator uses the industry-standard SIP future-value formula:

FV = P × [((1 + r)^n - 1) / r] × (1 + r)

where P is monthly SIP, r = annual return / 12, and n = months. The step-up version increases the SIP by your chosen percentage every year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I invest monthly in SIP?

A good starting rule is 15–20% of your take-home salary, stepped up 10% every year. For ₹50K salary, start at ₹7,500 and scale up.

Can SIP make me a crorepati?

Yes. ₹10,000 monthly SIP at 12% return for 20 years = ~₹1 crore. Add a 10% annual step-up and it grows to ~₹1.7 crore.

Is SIP safe?

SIP is a method, not a product. You invest in mutual funds, which carry market risk. Equity SIPs are ideal for 7+ year horizons.

What is a Step-Up SIP?

Step-Up SIP automatically increases your monthly SIP amount by a percentage (e.g. 10%) every year — matching your salary growth. Results in significantly larger corpus.

Can I stop SIP anytime?

Yes, you can pause or stop SIPs anytime without penalty. Your existing units stay invested and keep growing.

Which is the best SIP plan for beginners in India?

A combination of a Nifty 50 index fund SIP + a flexi-cap fund SIP works for most beginners. See our best SIP plans guide.
