How to Use the Rent Receipt Generator

Why Do You Need Rent Receipts for HRA?

If you are a salaried employee receiving House Rent Allowance (HRA) as part of your salary, you need rent receipts to claim HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act. Your employer will ask for rent receipts during the tax declaration process, typically between January and March each year.

Without valid rent receipts, your employer may not allow the HRA exemption, and the full HRA amount will be added to your taxable income. This can result in significantly higher tax outgo. Rent receipts serve as proof that you are actually paying rent for a residential property.

Even if your employer does not ask for receipts, it is good practice to maintain them. The Income Tax Department can ask for rent receipts during assessment or scrutiny proceedings for up to 6 years from the relevant assessment year.

HRA Exemption Rules 2026

HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) is available only under the old tax regime. The exempt HRA amount is the minimum of the following three values:

Under the new tax regime (default from FY 2023-24 onwards), HRA exemption is not available. If you have chosen the new regime, rent receipts are not needed for tax purposes, though you may still need them for company records.

When is Landlord PAN Required?

As per Income Tax rules, if your total annual rent payment exceeds Rs 1,00,000 (one lakh rupees), you must provide your landlord's PAN (Permanent Account Number) on the rent receipts. This rule was introduced to prevent fraudulent HRA claims.

What is a rent receipt and why is it needed?

A rent receipt is a written acknowledgment from your landlord confirming that you have paid rent for a specific period. It is needed to claim HRA (House Rent Allowance) exemption under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act. Your employer requires rent receipts as proof of rent payment during the annual tax declaration process. Without valid rent receipts, the full HRA amount becomes taxable income.

Is landlord PAN mandatory on rent receipts?

Landlord PAN is mandatory only if your total annual rent exceeds Rs 1,00,000 (one lakh). If your monthly rent is Rs 8,334 or more, the annual total crosses Rs 1 lakh and PAN becomes compulsory. If the landlord does not have PAN, obtain a signed declaration with their name and address. For rent below Rs 1 lakh per year, PAN is optional but recommended.

Are digital rent receipts valid for HRA claims?

Digital rent receipts are accepted by most employers and the Income Tax Department for processing HRA exemption claims. However, some employers may require physical copies with wet signatures. We recommend printing the generated PDF and getting it signed by your landlord. For cash payments above Rs 5,000, a Rs 1 revenue stamp should be affixed on the physical copy.

What details must a rent receipt include?

A valid rent receipt must include: tenant name, landlord name, property address, rent amount in numbers and words, payment mode, rent period (month and year), date of payment, and signatures of both tenant and landlord. For cash payments above Rs 5,000, a revenue stamp is needed. If annual rent exceeds Rs 1 lakh, landlord PAN is mandatory.

Can I claim HRA without rent receipts?

If your monthly rent is up to Rs 3,000, some employers may not ask for rent receipts. However, for rent above Rs 3,000 per month, rent receipts are mandatory for HRA exemption claims. The Income Tax Department can also ask for receipts during assessment. It is always advisable to maintain proper rent receipts regardless of the amount.

What happens if my annual rent exceeds Rs 1 lakh?

If your total annual rent exceeds Rs 1,00,000, you must provide your landlord's PAN on the rent receipts. Your employer is required to verify the landlord PAN before allowing HRA exemption. If you cannot provide the PAN, you need a signed declaration from the landlord stating they do not have one, along with their name and address details. Failing to provide PAN may result in your HRA claim being rejected.
