LTA is a salary component that provides tax exemption on travel expenses incurred during leave. Only domestic travel is covered — the shortest route economy airfare or first-class rail fare. LTA can be claimed twice in a block of 4 years. Only fare is exempt, not hotel or food expenses.
If your LTA is ₹30,000 and you spend ₹25,000 on flight tickets for a family vacation, ₹25,000 is tax-exempt. The remaining ₹5,000 is taxable.
