A dividend is a portion of a company's earnings distributed to its shareholders, usually in cash or additional shares. Dividends in India are taxed in the hands of the shareholder at their applicable slab rate after the abolition of DDT in 2020.
If Infosys declares a dividend of ₹18 per share and you hold 100 shares, you receive ₹1,800. At 30% tax slab, you pay ₹540 as dividend tax.
