What is KYC (Know Your Customer)? — Meaning, Definition & Example
Definition
KYC is a mandatory verification process for financial institutions to verify the identity and address of customers. Documents required typically include PAN card, Aadhaar, passport-size photo, and address proof. eKYC allows digital verification using Aadhaar OTP.
To open a mutual fund account on Groww or Zerodha, you complete KYC by submitting PAN, Aadhaar, and a selfie — the entire process takes under 5 minutes online.

What KYC Actually Is (and the Registry Behind It)
Know Your Customer = one-time identity verification (PAN + Aadhaar + photo) that every regulated institution must do. Behind the scenes sits CKYC — a central registry that issues a 14-digit KIN so, in theory, one KYC serves every bank, insurer and fund house. In practice, mutual funds run on KRA agencies (CVL, CAMS, KFintech, NDML), and their status flags decide what you can do — which is where everyone's confusion lives.
The Status Flags That Rule Your Mutual Funds
| Status | What It Means | What You Can Do |
|---|---|---|
| KYC Validated | PAN + Aadhaar verified with the source | Invest anywhere, any AMC — the gold status |
| KYC Registered | Done with non-Aadhaar documents | Continue in EXISTING funds; new AMCs need re-KYC |
| KYC On-Hold / Rejected | PAN-Aadhaar not linked, contact mismatch, etc. | Blocked — fix before any transaction |
Since the 2024 re-validation wave, lakhs of investors discovered they were 'Registered', not 'Validated'. The fix is one-time: re-KYC using Aadhaar (online via any KRA/AMC with Aadhaar-OTP). Check your current flag in 30 seconds on CVL KRA (cvlkra.com) or CAMS/KFintech portals with just your PAN.
Doing KYC in 2026: Fully Online Paths
① Aadhaar eKYC / DigiLocker — OTP-based, 5 minutes, leads to Validated status. ② Video KYC (banks/brokers) — live selfie + PAN shown on camera. ③ Offline Aadhaar XML for the privacy-conscious. Physical branch visits are now the fallback, not the default. Keep name spellings IDENTICAL across PAN-Aadhaar-bank — a single-letter mismatch is the #1 cause of On-Hold flags (fix via PAN correction or Aadhaar update).

Re-KYC for Banks: What's Legit
RBI requires periodic re-KYC — high-risk accounts every 2 years, medium 8, low 10. If nothing changed, a simple self-declaration (app/netbanking/email) is sufficient — banks may NOT freeze low-risk accounts merely for re-KYC delay without notice. If a branch insists on full documents for an unchanged low-risk account, cite the RBI master direction and escalate to the nodal officer.
