What is KYC (Know Your Customer)? — Meaning, Definition & Example

Definition

KYC is a mandatory verification process for financial institutions to verify the identity and address of customers. Documents required typically include PAN card, Aadhaar, passport-size photo, and address proof. eKYC allows digital verification using Aadhaar OTP.

💡 Real Example

To open a mutual fund account on Groww or Zerodha, you complete KYC by submitting PAN, Aadhaar, and a selfie — the entire process takes under 5 minutes online.

🇮🇳 KYC (Know Your Customer) in Hindi /

KYC (Know Your Customer) (Hinglish) — KYC financial institutions ke liye mandatory verification process hai. PAN, Aadhaar, photo, address proof dena hota hai. eKYC se online 5 minute mein ho jaata hai.

What KYC Actually Is (and the Registry Behind It)

Know Your Customer = one-time identity verification (PAN + Aadhaar + photo) that every regulated institution must do. Behind the scenes sits CKYC — a central registry that issues a 14-digit KIN so, in theory, one KYC serves every bank, insurer and fund house. In practice, mutual funds run on KRA agencies (CVL, CAMS, KFintech, NDML), and their status flags decide what you can do — which is where everyone's confusion lives.

The Status Flags That Rule Your Mutual Funds

StatusWhat It MeansWhat You Can Do
KYC ValidatedPAN + Aadhaar verified with the sourceInvest anywhere, any AMC — the gold status
KYC RegisteredDone with non-Aadhaar documentsContinue in EXISTING funds; new AMCs need re-KYC
KYC On-Hold / RejectedPAN-Aadhaar not linked, contact mismatch, etc.Blocked — fix before any transaction

Since the 2024 re-validation wave, lakhs of investors discovered they were 'Registered', not 'Validated'. The fix is one-time: re-KYC using Aadhaar (online via any KRA/AMC with Aadhaar-OTP). Check your current flag in 30 seconds on CVL KRA (cvlkra.com) or CAMS/KFintech portals with just your PAN.

Doing KYC in 2026: Fully Online Paths

Aadhaar eKYC / DigiLocker — OTP-based, 5 minutes, leads to Validated status. ② Video KYC (banks/brokers) — live selfie + PAN shown on camera. ③ Offline Aadhaar XML for the privacy-conscious. Physical branch visits are now the fallback, not the default. Keep name spellings IDENTICAL across PAN-Aadhaar-bank — a single-letter mismatch is the #1 cause of On-Hold flags (fix via PAN correction or Aadhaar update).

The 'KYC Expired' Scam — India's Most Effective Phishing

Rule: KYC never 'expires' by SMS. The message reading 'Dear customer your KYC expired, account will be blocked today, click link/call number' is a fraud template that empties accounts daily. Banks DO re-KYC periodically (every 2/8/10 years by risk category) — but always via official app/branch notice, never a link demanding urgency. Never share OTP for 'KYC update', never install screen-share apps, and verify any KYC demand by calling the number on the back of your card. Report attempts at cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 (see the recovery ladder in our UPI guide).

Re-KYC for Banks: What's Legit

RBI requires periodic re-KYC — high-risk accounts every 2 years, medium 8, low 10. If nothing changed, a simple self-declaration (app/netbanking/email) is sufficient — banks may NOT freeze low-risk accounts merely for re-KYC delay without notice. If a branch insists on full documents for an unchanged low-risk account, cite the RBI master direction and escalate to the nodal officer.

Rules verified as of July 2026 (incl. IRDAI April-2024 regulations and current MF-KYC regime). Facts last checked: 17 July 2026 by Priyanka Dhawan.

How do I check my mutual fund KYC status?
Go to cvlkra.com (or CAMS/KFintech KRA portals), enter your PAN, and the flag shows instantly: Validated (invest anywhere), Registered (existing funds only — do Aadhaar re-KYC to upgrade), or On-Hold (fix PAN-Aadhaar linking/details first). The upgrade is a one-time online Aadhaar-OTP process.
My bank sent an SMS saying KYC will expire and account will be blocked. Is it real?
Almost certainly a scam — 'KYC expiring today, click here' is India's most common phishing template. Legitimate re-KYC comes via official app/branch notices with reasonable timelines, and for unchanged low-risk accounts a self-declaration suffices. Never click the link; verify by calling your bank's official number and report the SMS at 1930/cybercrime.gov.in.
