What is GST (Goods and Services Tax)? — Meaning, Definition & Example

Definition

GST is India's unified indirect tax that replaced multiple taxes like VAT, service tax, excise duty, and customs surcharge. Implemented on 1 July 2017; since the September 2025 reforms (GST 2.0) it has two main slabs — 5% and 18% — plus a 40% rate on sin/luxury goods. GST is managed by the GST Council headed by the Union Finance Minister.

💡 Real Example

When you buy a phone for ₹20,000, you pay 18% GST (₹3,600), so the total price becomes ₹23,600. The GST collected is shared between Centre (CGST) and State (SGST).

🇮🇳 GST (Goods and Services Tax) in Hindi /

GST (Goods and Services Tax) (Hinglish) — GST India ka unified indirect tax hai jo VAT, service tax, excise duty ki jagah aaya. 1 July 2017 se lagu; September 2025 ke reforms ke baad do main slabs hain — 5% aur 18% — plus sin/luxury goods par 40%.

The structure changed in September 2025 — most articles are outdated. GST 2.0 (effective 22 Sep 2025) collapsed the old 5/12/18/28 system into two main slabs — 5% and 18% — plus a 40% rate for sin/luxury goods. And the headline for your wallet: individual life and health insurance premiums are now GST-EXEMPT (they carried 18% before).

The Current Map (GST 2.0)

RateWhat Lives HereExamples
0% / ExemptEssentials + newly exemptedUnbranded food staples, individual life & health insurance premiums, residential rent (to individuals)
5%Common-use goodsPackaged foods, footwear/apparel (mass), most former-12% items

40%Sin / luxuryTobacco, pan masala, high-end vehicles and similar demerit goods

CGST+SGST split intra-state, IGST inter-state — same total either way; it only decides which government gets the money.

Where GST Touches Your Money Life

Insurance: individual life/health = 0% now; group policies and motor insurance still 18% — your car premium quote includes it. Banking/broking: 18% on charges, card fees, brokerage — and yes, 18% GST applies ON credit-card interest, stacking cost on revolvers (one more reason the minimum-payment trap is worse than it looks). Mutual funds: 18% sits inside the expense ratio you already see. UPI: free remains free.

The Consumer's Two Practical Powers

Verify GSTIN: a shop adding 'GST' to a kaccha bill without a valid GSTIN is pocketing 18% extra — verify any GSTIN free on the GST portal in 10 seconds. ② Take the bill: the invoice is your warranty/consumer-court evidence, and it forces the tax actually reaching the government (the input-credit chain works only on real invoices — that's the whole design of GST).

Why Rates Still Move (and How to Stay Current)

The GST Council meets periodically and re-fits items between slabs — the Sep-2025 overhaul was the biggest since 2017 but not the last word. Rule for readers and writers alike: any article quoting a specific item's rate without a date is unreliable; check cbic-gst.gov.in or the item's latest notification when the exact % matters. Our GST calculator handles any rate you throw at it (add/remove GST, CGST/SGST split).

Rules verified as of July 2026 (incl. GST 2.0 structure effective 22 Sep 2025 and FY 2026-27 tax framework). Facts last checked: 18 July 2026 by Priyanka Dhawan.
