What is CIBIL Score? — Meaning, Definition & Example
Definition
CIBIL Score is a three-digit credit score (300-900) assigned by TransUnion CIBIL that represents your creditworthiness. A score above 750 is considered good for loan approvals. It is based on your repayment history (35%), credit utilization (30%), credit mix (25%), and credit age (10%).
With a CIBIL score of 780, you can get a home loan at 8.5% interest, but at 650, the same loan might cost 10.5% or get rejected.

What Actually Decides Your Score
| Factor | Weight (approx) | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Payment history | ~35% | Every EMI/card bill paid on time — one 30-day late mark can sting for months |
| Credit utilisation | ~30% | Card spend ÷ card limit; keep below 30% (below 10% is elite) |
| Credit age | ~15% | Average age of accounts — never close your oldest card |
| Credit mix | ~10% | A blend of secured (home/auto) + unsecured (cards) reads healthier |
| Hard inquiries | ~10% | Every loan/card application pings your report; several in a short window looks desperate |

What Counts as a Good Score
| Range | Verdict | What It Gets You |
|---|---|---|
| 300-549 | Poor | Loan rejections or heavy rates |
| 550-649 | Below average | Approvals with conditions, higher rates |
| 650-749 | Fair to good | Most loans approved at standard rates |
| 750-900 | Excellent | Best rates — home-loan lenders reserve their lowest advertised rates for ~750-800+ |
Check It Free (Don't Pay Anyone)
Every bureau must give you one free full report a year — get it at cibil.com (also Experian/Equifax/CRIF). Most banks and apps (bank netbanking, Paytm/Google Pay-style apps) show a free monthly score. Checking your OWN score is a soft inquiry — it never hurts the score; only lender-initiated hard inquiries do.
How Fast Can You Fix a Score?
1-2 months: utilisation drops show quickly — pay card bills BEFORE the statement date so a lower balance gets reported. 3-6 months: a clean streak of on-time payments starts outweighing older slips. 12-24 months: late-payment marks fade in impact (they stay visible up to 7 years but matter less each year). There is no legal shortcut — anyone selling "score repair in 7 days" is selling fraud; the only fixable errors are genuine report mistakes, disputed free at the bureau's site.
Three Mistakes That Quietly Kill Scores
1. Closing an old card — you lose its limit (utilisation jumps) and its age. Keep it alive with one small purchase a quarter. 2. Paying only the minimum due — it avoids a late mark but keeps utilisation maxed and interest running at 36-45% APR. 3. Loan-shopping in one week — four hard inquiries in a month reads as distress; space applications 2-3 months apart.
